Reduce the COD of the plastic recycling effluent

Published by in Technology

Please can someone provide advice about a good method to reduce the COD of plastic recycling effluent.

note - the effluent BOD is zero.

Much appreciated

Dear Mr. AsankaThe detail ...

Dear Mr. Asanka

The detail analysis of effluent is required. You have mention that BOD of effluent from plastic recycling is zero. It means COD is contributed by non biodegradable organic & reducing inorganic chemicals. It means no biological treatment can remove non biodegradable compounds from effluent.

The probable answers are as below.

a. Soluble & colloidal non biodegradable organic compounds – Flocculation, sand Filtration and & activated carbon filtration can give the good result

b. Soluble reducing non biodegradable – Mostly inorganic – RO will be the only alternative.

c. Insoluble / colloidal non biodegradable organic & inorganic – Flocculation,  Sedimentation, Sand filtration and Activated carbon filtration.

More alternative can be developed. For details please contact at rvsveipl@gmail.com

I hope you're doing great over there.I work for a training company called Zambezi Pride in Johannesburg,South Africa. The company gives training to all companies in the African continent. This time around we have a three day conference looking on Water Desalination,OR/Membrane and WASTE WATER RE-USE. We are running this event on 24th -26 July at Radisson Blu Le Vendome ,Cape town. We are going to have 23 speakers on board, on the last day we are going for a plant site visit. All the delegates are going to be granted a 3CPD points certificate. If interested please send through your email address, and l will provide you with full information of the course. Hi at Aerofloat (Australia), ...

Hi at Aerofloat (Australia), we've completed a few projects for plastic recycling companies. Using our patented Aeration and Patented AeroDAF, we recycle the water for the plastic washing process.

A typical process is Sweco Screen > AeroMBBR > AeroDAF > Return to wash plant. This maintains an odourless low TSS wash water, improving the quality of the finished plastic and reducing maintenance on pellet machines.

For Zero BOD, you would require chemical addition to the DAF for improved clarification of MBBR biosolids and fine solids from the washing process, + possible filtration off DAF effluent Sand filter or UF perhaps.

Cheers
Michael

Run a series of filtration ...

Run a series of filtration steps (TSS, membrane, ultra, nano) to see if the COD is due to solids or something that can be treated. Then give us the data on this and the types of plastic recycled and the type of recycling.

Let's start with the basics.  What is your TSS level?  Also look at the level of non-biodegradable oils in your effluent.  COD will reduce and measure lots of compounds that BOD bypasses because the BOD test is unreliable at low levels.  One of the things which can interfere with the COD test is chlorides.  Check your chloride levels and consult the Hach.com website for interference with the COD test.  TSS can also give you a high reading on COD but won't show up on BOD.

Hello the terms DBO and DCO correspond to a model of domestic wastewater treatment. they have nothing to do with the treatment of plastic that float in a liquid containing water that is only used for transport.

BOD is the demand for biological oxygen, THE DCO is the demand for chemical oxygen.

These two ask define the state of the liquid medium and have nothing to do with suspended matter that is not organic: plastic.

Data provided is sparse, but ...

Data provided is sparse, but first of all, try filtration down to low microns, next try activated carbon filtration, or a lime bed (to take out any organic acids that should combine with calcium).

Lastly, I would look at a UV system if all else fails, or an advanced oxidation using OH radical (the actual top oxidant in water).
